Ooops.
Time to join one of the fortnightly Sewing Clubs at fabric&finery to make a new one for this year?
Got an old table cloth or a skirt/trousers that you loved but dont wear anymore? Bring that too, it might well get a new life as a peg bag? Oh and dont forget a metal or plastic clothes hanger...
Club sessions have been updated on our website www fabricandfinery co uk until end of May 26. Full clubs wont show but those with vacancies do. If there was enough interest, it would be possible to add a fortnightly Monday morning Sewing Club 10am-12.30pm, just let me know. All Sewing Club sessions are £17 for 2.5hours with 10% shop stock discount on session days.
Any questions, just ask!
By the way, "Intermediate Sewing Club" doesnt mean you need to have sewn for decades, it just means you are post-Beginners class!
Meet you soon?

Would you like to learn how your OWN overlocker works?
Book a space in this weekends Sunday morning Overlocker for Beginners workshop and we make sure you go home with all this new knowledge about your overlocker and can use it confidently from then on!
This workshop is not suitable for air-threading-overlockers as we spend a long time threading and re-threading the overlockers incl. tension adjustments to make everyone comfortable with this important step.
Any questions? Pop into the shop, phone us or send us a message through the contact form on our website www fabricandfinery co uk - where you can also book your space and check out all the information about this workshop under the "classes & clubs" section.
You will wonder after the class why you waited so long, if you learn the use of an overlocker thoroughly and if it is explained to you in detail, there is absolutely no reason why you should not be able to use it just fine, including changing threads, changing needles, adjusting tensions, using the differential feed etc.
Trust the process, come along!

When I showed you my charity shop curtains purchase a few days ago which became Quilting Cutting Mats and parcel carriers, the eagle eyed amongst you had perhaps spotted another pink piece of fabric underneath the curtains....
This piece, that was actually a padded rose embellished lovely bed spread, has now become a sturdy carrier for the vintage, heavily beaded wedding dress in the huge box behind it. I would say the dress weighs round about 12kg, no hanger could hold it and a cardboard box is not the most romantic vessel....the new cloth bag is zipped all around, so I can work on the protected dress and I can also get it ready for the big day without crushing it again for its transport back to the bride. It fits into the carrier length wise with just the top part folded over a little. Dimension of carrier 1m x 2m.
I love a bit of practical sewing....and now to get this heavy beauty out of its box for some alterations to its top and front part...wedding dress alterations artists usually have strong arms...!!

Any questions at all, just send us a wee message. Find all the info and book your space in the classes & club section on our website www fabricandfinery co uk. Meet you soon?

Missed out on this beautiful 100% Cotton Poplin made in Italy last time round? Just secured another 25m of it, should be with us in about a weeks time!
Its so lovely to feel, such a pleasing calm pattern, several blouses, skirts and even bag linings have been made with the first bolt of it.
Much prefer Cotton Poplin to a Viscose, it doesnt curl on the edges, doesnt crease as bad as Viscose, doesnt pull ladders from stitching, it stays nice and crisp, whats not to like! Also less chemicals are used to produce it and you are less likely to sweat in it.
We are open Wed/Fri/Sat this week 10am to 5pm if you wanted to see what else is currently in stock - and of course you can browse our website 24/7 on www fabricandfinery co uk.
See you soon! Irina & team

The promised 2nd day summary of the h&h show Cologne...a few learning curves....yes I found the fashion colours I was looking for but these are only offered by premium suppliers that go with fashion more than mass suppliers who somewhat do their own thing and more deliver those clients who dont go with fashion either...an interesting philosophy! People who go with fashion will spend more budget on yarn that those who do not....something else I learned is that never mind the yarn, its the pattern that is the most important...the same yarn can look so much better in a fashionable pattern.... but tgere we go back to the same thing....fashionable patterns are much dearer than non fashionable patterns....interesting that! A quick summary from the h&h Coligne so far....hanging in a socket in the corridor as my phone is absolutely exhausted (and so am I!!) so I thought I use the moment to show you the first round of whats new...another 2 floors like this to walk through...I think all this has to sink in first before any fabric or yarn order decisions are being made...or I need another three shops!! Enjoy! ...

Sooo, I have been to the charity shop and with both finds now washed and dried I show you what I am making with these...for me sewing was always a sign of independence, of being able to make what one either cannot buy or only buy at great cost or difficulty.
Each time I was sending back a batch of tapestry cushion commissions to their various excited owners I was struggling to carry them big parcels along to the post office - and each time I was dragging the heavy, large cutting mats to the Saturday Quilt Club session at the Communitu hub, I was dreaming of a better solution....so here we are:
An eyelet curtain to the rescue, I halved it, sewed it up and shortened it a bit so it wouldnt drag on the floor. Changed the positioning of the webbing after the inaugural run to the post office, so now the top sits more stable. Will now make another bag like this with the other side of the curtain, so in future I can deliver small window seat and cushion orders without using any plastic wrapping. The lining inside the curtains prevents friction. I am very pleased with this!
£7 for the set of curtains and £1.45/m for the webbing, that`s £5.50 cost per bag. For me personally THIS is where the ability to sew really kicks in. I made something that I could not buy like that and have supported other local shops when sourcing the ingredients.
What have you made that you could not have bought like that? Let me know and show us some pictures, would love to see! Irina

At todays Dressmaking Club session for which we enjoy the wonderfully spacious Helensburgh Community Hall, we worked on the following:
+ copying an existing dress incl improvement adjustments and practising inset corners
+ using satin bias binding for edging in a fluffy gilet
+ setting in sleeves and practising french seams
+ scaling down a roomy blouse
+ making sleeve and shoulder adjustments to a dress pattern
+ adjusting a dungaree pattern
...a lot going on, good progress was made! Would you like to join this club? We currently have 2 spaces available. Fortnightly Saturday sessions, morning or afternoon, hall depending, at £25 per 3 hour session. Bring your own pattern/project and I will guide you through it. You can be a total Dressmaking Beginner. Any questions, just ask! Many thanks, Irina

Look what weeeee have got!!
On show today in the shop at 32 East Princes Street, Helensburgh, are these two ICE CREAM TUB COZIES that will begin their life as Easter Egg baskets first and then will be ice cream cozies for the rest of the year....
One of our sewing club members started the craze as she was looking for something cool and usable to make with left over quilt blocks, then many others followed suit!
To find the template and instructions free online, just google "Ice cream tub cozy" and a plethora of options will come up!
Happy Creating! Needing some for fabric and fusible fleece for this project? Come along, we are open until 5pm today - and the market is on in town, too!!
